The hospital was unusually quiet that night.
Too quiet.
I adjusted my gloves as I walked fast through the emergency ward. The rain outside was heavy, like it wanted to break into the building too.
I kept my head down. I just wanted to finish my shift in peace.
That’s when I heard him again.
“The patient in room three needs another IV line.”
That voice.
Deep. Calm. Always controlled.
Dr. Ethan Cole.
Everyone in St. Mary’s Hospital knew him. Or feared him. Or both.
They said he was brilliant. Handsome. But cold. The kind of doctor who didn’t waste emotions on anyone.
I tried not to look at him as I handed over the patient file.
But of course… he noticed me.
“You’re shaking,” he said.
I swallowed. “I’m fine, doctor.”
His eyes didn’t leave me. “You almost gave the patient the wrong dosage.”
My stomach dropped.
I froze right there.
“I… I checked it twice,” I said quickly.
